LaFleur: Packers won't gain edge after Gibbs leaked Lions' code words

Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur downplayed the importance of potentially knowing some of the Detroit Lions' protection codes ahead of their divisional matchup Thursday.

Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs recently posted a photo of teammate Jermar Jefferson on social media that seemingly showed some of Detroit's protection calls on a whiteboard.

"I'm sure our guys aren't going to sit there and study every code word they have in their offense," LaFleur said Tuesday, according to Pro Football Talk's Josh Alper. "You can get this stuff in the TV copies. I mean, there are certain things you can pick up off the TV copies. That's why most teams - I would say probably every team in the league - listen to what they're putting out there as well as what the opponent's putting out there, and you try to piece it together. Personally, I think it's probably a little bit overrated. Ultimately, you still gotta stop whatever they're doing."

LaFleur added: "I don't think you gain a real competitive advantage off of that," per Kevin Patra of NFL.com.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell learned about Gibbs' photo during a press conference Sunday.

"Oh, I didn't know that. Did not know that. OK, I need to check on that then. Did not know that. Yeah, I'd rather our stuff not be out there," Campbell said before leaving the podium to end the presser.

However, the Lions sideline boss played down the issue Monday.

"I don't really give a crap," Campbell said, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Pass. "If we're going to lose because of code words, then we're not good enough anyway. So I think we'll just post the whole fricking playbook out there and every code word we've got. And it doesn't matter. It's not going to hurt us."

He added: "Do I want us posting stuff up from our locker room or our players or whatever? No, I don't because you don't know what's going to happen with something like that. But no, in the grand scheme of things, it's not a big deal."

Detroit offensive coordinator Ben Johnson suggested that Gibbs may have intentionally leaked the team's code words.

"You guys thought about maybe we wanted them out there?" Johnson said Monday, seemingly joking, per Birkett. "So now we know what they know?"

Former Packers left tackle David Bakhtiari believes the Lions will have to "completely revamp new words to assign" at the line of scrimmage.

The NFC North showdown between the 11-1 Lions and 9-3 Packers could have major playoff implications. Detroit - which beat Green Bay on Nov. 3 - will clinch a postseason berth with a win this week.
