Kelce's impromptu lateral shocked Mahomes, Perine
Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes told Travis Kelce to get the team into field-goal range on a third-and-22 late in the first half of Monday's contest, but he didn't expect the tight end to perform a gutsy lateral to do so.
"It's like I'm talking to (my child) Sterling," Mahomes told reporters postgame, including The Kansas City Star's Sam McDowell.
Kelce caught a quick pass before running across the field and pitching the ball to running back Samaje Perine, who nearly ran for a first down. The Chiefs converted on fourth-and-short before settling for a field goal several plays later.
Perine said he's "never" played with a teammate who's tried similar "backyard football" plays before.
"It was not scripted, I can tell you that much," the running back said, per Todd Leabo of Sports Radio 810 WHB. "I saw him do it a couple of times, he does it in practice, so I was like, 'Let me stay in phase, just in case,' and sure enough, (it worked)."
Perine added that was the first Kelce lateral he's caught, including in practice.
Kelce finished with 70 yards on a season-high nine receptions in the 26-13 win over the New Orleans Saints. Perine wasn't credited with a reception on the lateral but did officially garner receiving yards during the play. Overall, he recorded one catch for 24 yards Monday.
