Miami-Dade Police release body-cam video from Hill detainment
Warning: Video contains coarse language
The Miami-Dade Police Department released body-cam footage from Sunday's incident in which Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained and handcuffed.
The Dolphins later released a statement, stating they were "saddened by the overly aggressive and violent conduct" directed toward Hill and other players. The team also urged the Miami-Dade Police Department to take "swift and strong action against the officers who engaged in such despicable behavior."
"Let's make a change," Hill wrote on X following the release of the body-cam footage.
Miami-Dade Police Department said Monday its decision to release over 105 minutes of body cam footage stemmed from its "commitment to transparency and maintaining public trust."
Police detained Hill and released him near Hard Rock Stadium hours before the Dolphins' Week 1 contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
The wideout said postgame that he had "no idea" why he was detained and placed in handcuffs and that he wasn't disrespectful. Hill added that officers told him he was stopped for "speeding" and "reckless driving."
Hill's teammate Calais Campbell was also handcuffed in his attempts to diffuse the situation.
The Miami-Dade Police Department requested an immediate review of the incident. Following the Dolphins' win, the department announced that it had placed one of the officers involved on administrative duties while the internal probe is conducted.
The president of the South Florida police union, Steadman Stahl, said earlier Monday that Hill was not "immediately cooperative" with officers, which led to him being handcuffed and placed on the ground.
"Upon being stopped, Mr. Hill was not immediately cooperative with the officers on the scene who, pursuant to policy and for their immediate safety, placed Mr. Hill in handcuffs," Stahl said. "Mr. Hill, still uncooperative, refused to sit on the ground and was therefore redirected to the ground. Once the situation was sorted out within a few minutes, Mr. Hill was issued two traffic citations and was free to leave."
Hill was given two citations for careless driving and a seat belt violation, sources told ESPN's Jeff Darlington.
