Sumo champion fractures fellow wrestler's skull with beer bottle
Grand champion sumo wrestler Harumafuji left a competitor with a fractured skull following a drunken attack late last month.
Harumafuji, who has achieved the highest rank of yokozuna, was drinking with the victim, Takanoiwa, and other Mongolian wrestlers on Oct. 26 when he became upset with Takanoiwa's "attitude" and struck him with a beer bottle, according to the Japan Times.
The Japan Sumo Association announced Monday that Takanoiwa was hospitalized from Nov. 5-9 and has been diagnosed with a skull base fracture and concussion, among other injuries.
On Tuesday, Harumafuji withdrew from the ongoing Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament and apologized for his actions.
"Regarding Takanoiwa’s injury, I sincerely apologize for causing trouble to his stablemaster, his stable, the Japan Sumo Association and my stablemaster," Harumafuji said. "I cannot comment further until my stablemaster comes back."
