Notre Dame's Carr wins starting QB job
Notre Dame has named CJ Carr as starting quarterback for their Week 1 matchup against Miami, the team announced Tuesday.
The redshirt freshman beat out Kenny Minchey for the position. Head coach Marcus Freeman said in the spring that Carr and Minchey would battle for the starting signal-caller job at camp.
Carr was an ESPN 300 four-star recruit in the 2024 class and the second-ranked pocket passer behind Nebraska's Dylan Raiola. The 19-year-old is listed at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds.
Notre Dame is coming off a 14-2 season and a loss to Ohio State in the National Championship. Many players from the 2024 team are returning, including Jeremiah Love, who is widely considered one of the best running backs in college football.
The Fighting Irish's offense ranked fifth in the FBS in points per contest last season. Riley Leonard, who was selected in the sixth round of the 2025 draft by the Indianapolis Colts, started all 16 games at quarterback in 2024.
