Lance Leipold signed a six-year contract to become Kansas' head coach, the school announced Friday.

"I am absolutely thrilled to welcome coach Leipold, (his wife) Kelly, (daughter) Lindsey, and (son) Landon to the Jayhawk family," said Kansas athletic director Travis Goff. "He is a man of integrity, a developer of young men, a program builder, and a winner. His track record of sustained excellence is exactly what we were looking for in our next leader and is what the University of Kansas and our fans deserve.

Leipold, 56, elevated the Bulls in his six years in Buffalo. He helped the program qualify for a bowl game in each of the last three seasons and led the program to three straight winning campaigns for the first time in 20 years. Leipold also won six Division III national titles at Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The Jayhawks parted ways with coach Les Miles in March amid allegations of inappropriate behavior in 2013 during Miles' time at LSU.

Other candidates that were considered for Kansas' head coaching position included Army's Jeff Monken, Texas A&M defensive coordinator Mike Elko, and Louisiana Tech's Skip Holtz, according to Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports.

The Jayhawks were winless in nine games last season.
