SGA: Thunder 'absolutely' want to chase down NBA wins record

Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has won just about everything he possibly could in the last calendar year: NBA MVP, the NBA championship, Finals MVP, and his second Northern Star Award recognizing Canada's top athlete.

With the Thunder rolling once again, he has his sights set on history: the league's single-season wins record.

"Absolutely," Gilgeous-Alexander said Friday when asked if that record meant anything to him and his teammates, per ESPN's Tim MacMahon. "Winning matters. And no matter what form it looks like to me. So absolutely."

The Thunder are a staggering 24-1 so far. The NBA single-season record for wins is 73, set by the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors.

Oklahoma City has won 16 straight games. Although the Thunder have a long way to go before matching the all-time mark of 33 consecutive victories set by the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers, Gilgeous-Alexander is up for the challenge.

"Wow, that's a lot more games to win," the Hamilton, Ontario, native said. "Yeah, we are so far from that. I didn't even know, so that hasn't even come close to creeping in my mind. But hopefully we get there. That's the goal."

He also made it clear that winning more championships remains OKC's top priority.

"We are trying to be a better version of ourselves every night we go out there, and we like to hunt in that form," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "If we didn't get better tonight, then we wasted an opportunity. That's kind of how we see it."

The Thunder face the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday in the NBA Cup semifinal.
