Spurs' Fox unlikely to play opening night due to hamstring injury
San Antonio Spurs guard De'Aaron Fox doesn't believe he'll be available for the team's season opener against the Dallas Mavericks on Oct. 22 due to hamstring and finger injuries.
Fox revealed Monday during media day that he's dealing with a right hamstring injury, according to The Athletic's Jared Weiss. He's also recovering from a left pinkie injury that required season-ending surgery in March.
"I don't think I'll be ready for opening night," Fox said.
While Fox added that he feels ready to return to the court, he admitted that the final decision on when he's cleared to play is in the hands of the team's training staff.
"I felt like I could've played a little bit ago, but they're not letting me," Fox said. "We're taking it day by day, but I feel good."
The 27-year-old played in 17 games for the Spurs last season after being acquired in a trade from the Sacramento Kings on Feb. 3. Fox averaged 23.5 points, 6.3 assists, and 4.8 rebounds in 62 games between San Antonio and Sacramento in 2024-25.
Fox's latest injury leaves the Spurs further shorthanded in the backcourt. Rookie guard Dylan Harper underwent surgery earlier in September to repair a ligament tear in his left thumb and is likely to miss the preseason.
