Report: Nets' Fernandez resigns as head coach of Team Canada
Jordi Fernandez is stepping away from his role as head coach of Team Canada's senior men's basketball team, sources told Sportsnet's Michael Grange.
The Brooklyn Nets head coach took the position in June 2023 when Nick Nurse was hired by the Philadelphia 76ers.
Fernandez guided Canada to a program-best third-place finish at the 2023 FIBA World Cup to help the country earn its first Olympic berth since 2000.
Canada went undefeated through group play, defeating Greece, Australia, and Spain. However, its run ended in the quarterfinal round at the hands of Victor Wembanyama and host France.
Canada is currently fifth in the FIBA rankings.
Fernandez split eight seasons as an assistant with the Denver Nuggets and Sacramento Kings before earning his first head coaching gig last April with the Nets. The 42-year-old is 17-33 in his debut campaign with Brooklyn.
