Dejounte Murray sustains season-ending Achilles tear
New Orleans Pelicans guard Dejounte Murray will miss the rest of the season with a torn right Achilles tendon, the team announced Saturday.
Murray suffered the injury with four minutes to play in the first quarter Friday against the Boston Celtics. The Pelicans starter fell to the court after pushing off his right foot to rebound his own miss and immediately limped to the locker room with assistance.
Murray was averaging 17.9 points, 7.6 assists, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.1 steals in 30 games entering play Friday. He missed 17 contests at the beginning of the campaign because of a fractured hand. The Pelicans went 3-14 over that stretch and are 12-37 on the season, ranking 14th in the Western Conference.
The 28-year-old recorded four points on 2-of-6 shooting along with five rebounds across eight minutes in the team's 118-116 loss to the Celtics.
New Orleans acquired the one-time All-Star over the offseason, trading Dyson Daniels, Larry Nance Jr., Cody Zeller, E.J. Liddell, and two first-round picks to the Atlanta Hawks.
Murray signed a four-year, $114-million contract in 2023. He holds a player option for the 2027-28 season worth $31.6 million.
