The first event involves four teams comprised of rookie and sophomore players. Three of the squads are honorarily led by the famous Warriors trio of Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond, and Chris Mullin, while the fourth squad features G League players led by nine-year NBA veteran Jeremy Lin. To win the semifinal bouts, both teams will have to score at least 40 combined points, with a champion determined by reaching or surpassing 25.

The victor of the event will go on to play in the new revamped All-Star Game on Sunday.

Skills Challenge

The NBA tweaked the format this year, adding a fourth squad while limiting the number of participants to just two per team instead of the three players allowed in prior years. Groups representing the location of the All-Star competition have won the last three events, potentially giving an edge to Draymond Green and Moses Moody. The other teams are led by Victor Wembanyama and Donovan Mitchell, though, which could even things up.

Three-Point Contest

Lillard is looking to become the third player since Larry Bird in 1986-1988 and Craig Hodges in 1990-92 to win three contests in a row. Jalen Brunson is the only player from last year's competition to challenge Lillard, while Warriors guard Buddy Hield won the event in 2020 as a member of the Sacramento Kings.

Dunk Contest

Mac McClung is setting out to do something no other player has ever done: win the Dunk Contest in three straight seasons. Nate Robinson has won a trio of trophies himself, but only tallied two consecutive wins, in 2009 and 2010. Players out to stop the heavy favorite include a pair of rookies, Matas Buzelis and Stephon Castle, as well as high-flying guard Andre Jackson Jr. of the Milwaukee Bucks.

The NBA has decided upon another format change for the league's marquee event, opting for a four-team mini-tournament over an East-West clash or player-led drafts. The rules are similar to the Rising Stars event, except the championship-winning team will have to reach that 40-point threshold in both games played. The winning team from Friday's Rising Stars event will face a squad named after Shaquille O'Neal in one semifinal contest, while Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith's teams will duke it out in the other.
