Wizards' Brogdon has thumb surgery, reportedly out at least 1 month
Washington Wizards veteran Malcolm Brogdon underwent surgery to fix a torn ligament in his right thumb, the team announced Tuesday.
Brogdon is expected to miss at least a month, reports The Athletic's Josh Robbins.
The Wizards acquired the 2016-17 Rookie of the Year - along with a first-round pick in the 2024 draft, which turned into Bub Carrington - from Portland in the offseason in exchange for versatile forward Deni Avdija.
Brogdon, 31, was meant to replace Tyus Jones, who inked a one-year, $3.3-million deal with the Phoenix Suns this summer.
Brogdon averaged 15.7 points, 5.5 assists, and only 1.5 turnovers last season. However, injuries have continued to plague his career, as the Virginia product has only played over 60 games once in the previous five campaigns.
Rookies Carrington and Kyshawn George will immediately be forced into bigger roles. Second-year guard Bilal Coulibaly will also likely get more on-ball reps at the beginning of the season.
The Wizards will begin their campaign Oct. 24 against the defending champion Boston Celtics.
