Report: Pistons pursuing Monty Williams, prepared to offer around $10M per year

The Detroit Pistons are pursuing former Phoenix Suns head coach Monty Williams to be the franchise's next bench boss, sources told The Athletic's Shams Charania.

The Pistons are reportedly preparing to offer Williams a contract in the range of $10 million per year. That figure would put him among the league’s highest-paid coaches.

Since Williams' dismissal with the Suns earlier in May, the 51-year-old has been on the Pistons' radar as the next coach of the franchise, according to Charania, citing league sources.

Detroit reportedly tabbed three finalists for the vacancy before Williams became available, targeting Milwaukee Bucks associate head coach Charles Lee, former University of Connecticut and Overtime Elite coach Kevin Ollie, and New Orleans Pelicans assistant Jarron Collins.

Lee is expected to be the next choice if Williams declines the offer, sources told Charania.

Dwane Casey stepped down as head coach at the end of the regular season, moving into a front-office role with the Pistons. The veteran coach amassed a 121-263 record over five seasons with the club.

Williams served as head coach of the Suns for four seasons, leading the team to a Finals appearance in 2021 and 64 wins the following campaign. Phoenix was eliminated in the second round by the Denver Nuggets this postseason.
