Report: Pirates, Griffin nearing 9-year, $140M extension
The Pittsburgh Pirates and MLB's No. 1 prospect Konnor Griffin are close to finalizing a nine-year, $140-million contract extension, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.
The deal - if finalized - will establish a new record in terms of compensation for a player who has yet to debut in the majors, besting Colt Emerson's eight-year, $95-million pact signed with the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday.
Griffin, the consensus No. 1 prospect in baseball, is expected to make his MLB debut Friday in the Pirates' home opener against the Baltimore Orioles. The 19-year-old shortstop will be the first teenaged position player to suit up in the majors since Juan Soto in 2018.
Griffin was one of the last cuts during spring training but responded with a torrid start in the first five Triple-A games of his career, going 7-for-16 with three stolen bases and five walks. In 2025, he slashed .333/.415/.527 with 21 homers, 94 RBIs, and 65 steals across 122 contests between three minor-league levels.
The Pirates selected Griffin with the No. 9 pick in the 2024 draft.
