Cincinnati Reds ace Hunter Greene will undergo a procedure to remove bone chips from his elbow Wednesday, the right-hander confirmed on X.

As a result, Greene is expected to be out until July, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer.

"It's definitely good news compared to what it could have been," Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall said, per ESPN. "... He'll be like a trade-deadline acquisition."

Greene had been dealing with right elbow discomfort dating back to last season and opted to undergo an MRI when the pain returned during spring training. He noted that his ulnar collateral ligament is not damaged.

"The discomfort was there down the stretch last year, but because our push to get to (the) playoffs was so important, I recognized the moment and pushed through it like any player would," Greene wrote in a message to fans Tuesday.

"All I want to do is play the game I love and compete with my brothers as we take on the 2026 season," he added. "But it's important that this procedure take place now instead of trying to pitch through it, not be sharp on the mound and risk further injury. Trust me, nobody is more frustrated than I am."

The 26-year-old went 7-4 with a 2.76 ERA across 19 starts last season. He struck out 132 batters in 107 2/3 innings.

Cincinnati selected Green with the No. 2 overall pick in 2017. He earned his first All-Star nod during the 2024 campaign.
