Report: Alonso to meet with Red Sox, Orioles this week

The Polar Bear is ready to shake up the winter meetings.

Star slugger Pete Alonso will attend in person and plans to sit down with interested teams in Orlando on Tuesday, sources told Mike Puma of the New York Post.

AL East rivals the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles have already set up meetings with Alonso, Puma reports. It's not known if the New York Mets, the only team he's played for in seven big-league seasons, are among the teams planning to visit with him.

Alonso, who turned 31 on Sunday, returned to the Mets on a two-year, $54-million deal last winter after contentious negotiations dragged his free agency into mid-February. He re-entered the market in November by opting out of the final year of that deal and is now reportedly seeking a seven-year contract. He's not tied to draft-pick compensation this winter, as he was ineligible to receive a qualifying offer after being tendered one last year.

Alonso's agent, Scott Boras, said in November that his client is open to shifting into a primary designated hitter role with the right team.

The Red Sox have been connected to Alonso for some time, given their need for a powerful middle-of-the-order bat and question marks at first base. He'd also be a perfect fit for Fenway Park, where he'd be able to aim for the Green Monster. Alonso could either play first base in Boston and allow the team to field offers for Triston Casas or slide into more of a full-time DH role.

While Camden Yards wouldn't be as friendly a ballpark for Alonso's right-handed power, he'd still represent a major upgrade for Baltimore's lineup. The Orioles could rotate him between first base and DH while sliding Coby Mayo into more of a utility role and splitting Samuel Basallo's time between catcher and DH.

Alonso's 264 homers are the third most in the majors since he debuted in 2019, and he's hit at least 34 in every full season over that span. The five-time All-Star posted an .871 OPS with 38 homers, 126 RBIs, and a National League-leading 41 doubles with the Mets in 2025.
