The Toronto Blue Jays removed outfielder Anthony Santander from their postseason roster Thursday with Major League Baseball's approval.

Santander is now ineligible to play in the World Series. He was replaced by Joey Loperfido, who's eligible to play Game 4 and the remainder of the ALCS.

The 30-year-old Santander has been dealing with lumbar spine inflammation throughout the postseason and wasn't included in the Blue Jays' starting lineup for Game 4.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Santander's back was "pretty stiff" and "sore" after Wednesday's Game 3 win, according to Sportsnet's Arden Zwelling.

"Checked in with him this morning, and he still felt it," Schneider added. "Talking to him and after getting some treatment, didn't feel like the right thing to do to put him out there."

The slugger, who's in his first campaign with the Blue Jays, slashed .175/.271/.294 with six home runs and 18 RBIs in the regular season after signing a five-year, $92.5-million deal in January.

Santander went 3-for-15 with two RBIs during the playoffs.
