Report: Blue Jays add Eloy Jiménez on minor-league deal

The Toronto Blue Jays and designated hitter Eloy Jiménez have agreed to a minor-league contract, a source told Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.

Jiménez hasn't played in the majors this season. He recorded a .278/.335/.397 slash line with three homers and 29 RBIs over 40 Triple-A games in the Tampa Bay Rays' minor-league system, but hasn't played since July 1.

The 28-year-old was one of the best prospects in baseball before debuting with the Chicago White Sox during the 2019 campaign, going deep 31 times with 79 RBIs and an .828 OPS across 122 games en route to finishing fourth in AL Rookie of the Year voting. He was also named a Silver Slugger during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

Jiménez famously signed a six-year, $43-million contract before playing a single MLB game.

However, Jiménez's career has been derailed by injuries, as he logged just 412 games over the next five seasons following his rookie year. He was traded to the Baltimore Orioles in July 2024 before signing a minors pact with the Rays last offseason.
