Yankees' Gil to have MRI after experiencing shoulder tightness
New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil will undergo an MRI on Saturday after Friday's bullpen session ended early due to tightness near his right shoulder.
"He just felt tight and wasn't able to really let it go," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said, according to Greg Joyce of the New York Post.
"When a pitcher stops his bullpen, that's concerning. But I also don't want to get too far ahead. We'll see what we have. But anytime they pull themselves from a bullpen a couple pitches in, that's concerning."
Gil, 26, authored a 3.50 ERA with 1.19 WHIP and 171 strikeouts over 151 2/3 innings (29 starts) last season en route to capturing AL Rookie of the Year.
"Hopefully it's not something too serious, but also feels like something that's going to cost us some time," Boone said.
Gil's injury likely means that Marcus Stroman will begin the season in New York's rotation. Stroman was on the trade block following the free-agent signing of Max Fried.
Boone also said right-hander JT Brubaker fractured three ribs when he was hit by a comebacker during a spring game Feb. 21, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. The 31-year-old hasn't pitched in the majors since 2022 due to Tommy John surgery and an oblique injury.
