Rockies sign lefty reliever Alexander to 1-year deal worth reported $2M
The Colorado Rockies signed veteran left-hander Scott Alexander to a one-year contract, they announced Wednesday.
The deal will pay Alexander a salary of $2 million, a source told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
Alexander spent 2024 with the Oakland Athletics, where he turned in a solid bounce-back season despite battling injuries. In 45 relief appearances, he posted a 2.56 ERA, 3.89 FIP, and 1.19 WHIP along with 31 strikeouts while allowing only three home runs.
Alexander will likely serve as manager Bud Black's primary weapon against left-handed hitters. The southpaw's had great success against them over his 10 big-league seasons, holding opposing lefty bats to a .564 OPS with seven home runs, compared to righties' .736 OPS with 13 round-trippers.
The 35-year-old immediately becomes the oldest and most experienced member of Colorado's bullpen and adds a third left-handed arm to the unit, joining Lucas Gilbreath and Luis Peralta. Alexander, whose three-pitch arsenal includes a sinker, slider, and changeup, could see late-inning action behind closer Tyler Kinley.
Alexander owns a lifetime 3.20 ERA, 3.68 FIP, and 1.29 WHIP with 232 strikeouts and 10 saves across 328 big-league appearances with four teams. He helped the Los Angeles Dodgers win three NL pennants between 2017-20 and earned a ring with L.A. in 2020.
To make room for Alexander on the 40-man roster, Colorado designated infielder Aaron Schunk for assignment.
