Mozeliak frustrated by lack of progress on Arenado trade
St. Louis Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak is still struggling to find a suitable trade partner for Nolan Arenado.
"Needless to say, it's been frustrating," he said, according to MLB.com's John Denton.
Mozeliak revealed he's been talking with the five teams to which Arenado would accept a trade and that his list hasn't grown with spring training about to begin, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and San Diego Padres are three destinations Arenado would accept a move to, Goold reports.
Arenado vetoed a trade to the Houston Astros earlier this offseason.
The Red Sox were most recently reported to be engaged in trade talks, but all parties remain without a clear timeline for a resolution, especially with free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman still unsigned.
"Obviously, the pink elephant in the room is, 'What are we going to do with Nolan Arenado?'" Mozeliak said, per Denton. "Candidly, we're still looking at what that might look like. Could something happen in the next week? Possibly. Could this go into camp? Possibly."
The 33-year-old is owed $74 million over the next three seasons, though the Colorado Rockies are responsible for $10 million. He's coming off a down year by his standards, hitting .272/.325/.394 with just 16 home runs and 71 RBIs.
The eight-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner holds a career .857 OPS (120 OPS+) and was an MVP finalist in 2022.
