J.D. Martinez signs pickleball deal, eyes pro career in retirement
J.D. Martinez already has plans for retirement.
The 14-year-old MLB veteran recently signed a deal with JOOLA to become a professional pickleball player after he retires from baseball.
"I see pickleball as a sport I'll be involved in for the long run, and JOOLA’s commitment to the sport and my personal growth in the game makes this partnership even more special," Martinez said in a statement after signing the agreement.
Martinez started playing pickleball as an offseson hobby in recent years and will begin training with JOOLA pro Eric White as part of the arrangement.
"As part of this partnership, JOOLA will provide J.D. with comprehensive support, including coaching and equipment. In addition to training, J.D. will receive backing from JOOLA to compete in professional events like the PPA Challenger Series and to host his own pickleball tournaments," a JOOLA statement read.
Martinez, 37, reportedly plans to continue playing baseball in 2025 but remains a free agent.
The six-time All-Star slashed .235/.320/.406 with 16 home runs and 69 RBIs for the New York Mets last season.
