Chisholm smells historic comeback: 'We're the team that can do it'
New York Yankees third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. feels like his team got some of its mojo back with Tuesday's Game 4 win to extend the World Series.
"The one thing about us is, we love history, and we love to make history. So, for us, we're out here trying to make history right now," Chisholm said postgame, per SNY. "We know it's never been done (in the World Series), a 3-0 comeback, but we feel like we're the team that can do it."
The Yankees finally woke up offensively Tuesday, banging out nine hits, including three home runs, to save their season. Chisholm did his part by going 1-for-4 with a walk, a run scored, and a stolen base out of the cleanup spot.
New York became the first team to stave off elimination when down 3-0 in a World Series since the 1970 Cincinnati Reds, who ultimately lost that series in five games. The Yankees' odds are certainly long: Just two teams - the 2004 Boston Red Sox and 2020 Houston Astros - have even forced a Game 7 after trailing 3-0 in a best-of-seven series, and only the Red Sox managed to complete the comeback. Teams have only completed a "reverse sweep" five times in MLB, NHL, and NBA history combined.
The Yankees will have their ace, Gerrit Cole, on the mound Wednesday to try and force the series back to Los Angeles. That's left Chisholm with plenty of optimism ahead of their next do-or-die contest.
"Every time G goes out there we feel like we're in a great spot. He's like, the best pitcher in the world," Chisholm said. "You see him out there, you see his dominance, the way he (is) on the field, how intense he is, the way he goes about his business is great. So I think we have a great chance every time he steps on the field."
