Mariners place Castillo on IL with hamstring strain

The Seattle Mariners placed star right-hander Luis Castillo on the 15-day injured list with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, the club announced Tuesday.

Castillo had a PRP injection, and there's hope he could return after a minimum stint on the IL, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

"Talking to the trainers, they think it's not out of the question that he could be ready by the time the 15 days are up," Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said, according to The Associated Press. "He's a fast healer. He felt stronger and better already today."

The Mariners also moved right-hander Yimi García to the 60-day injured list with elbow inflammation, ending his season.

The 31-year-old Castillo left his start against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday after three innings.

Castillo has put together another productive season on the mound, posting an 11-12 record with a 3.64 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and 175 strikeouts across 175 1/3 innings.

The Mariners acquired García from the Toronto Blue Jays at the trade deadline. The 34-year-old posted a 6.00 ERA in 10 appearances with Seattle.

The Mariners trail the Houston Astros by 4.5 games for first place in the AL West and are three games back of the final AL wild-card spot.
