Cashman: Verdugo over Domínguez gives Yankees best chance to win

General manager Brian Cashman said the New York Yankees opted not to promote top prospect Jasson Domínguez because the team believes it has a better chance of winning with Alex Verdugo playing left field, according to Greg Joyce of the New York Post.

"Jasson is doing everything he needs to do right now and Verdugo is playing better baseball recently," Cashman said Friday, per Joyce. "The evaluations that we're having with our field staff and player development staff, front office staff, is just what is going to give us the best chance to win. As of right now, we're staying pat with what we've got."

The Yankees' decision not to promote Domínguez when rosters expanded in September raised eyebrows.

The 21-year-old hit his seventh home run of the Triple-A season on Thursday in his 41st game with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.

Domínguez is hitting .313 with an .868 OPS and 24 RBIs at Triple-A. He missed time with an oblique injury earlier this season and has made one appearance for the Yankees in 2024.

Verdugo has struggled at the plate in his first campaign with the Yankees, posting a .652 OPS with 11 home runs, 56 RBIs, and 67 runs scored in 134 games.
