The St. Louis Cardinals optioned struggling second baseman Nolan Gorman to Triple-A, the club announced Wednesday.

The 24-year-old former top prospect has recorded 19 homers with 50 RBIs and a .671 OPS over 107 games this season following a breakout 2023 campaign that saw him go deep 27 times with 76 RBIs and an .805 OPS in 119 contests.

Gorman's numbers cratered in August as he posted a .508 OPS. He's also amassed a team-leading 151 strikeouts over 402 plate appearances and the third-highest strikeout rate (37.6) in the majors.

Manager Oliver Marmol plans to give utility player Brendan Donovan the majority of reps at second base going forward, according to John Denton of MLB.com. The hope is that using Donovan at the keystone will open up more at-bats elsewhere for Tommy Pham and Matt Carpenter.

Infielder José Fermín was recalled to take Gorman's spot on the active roster.
