Twins place Ryan on IL with teres major strain

The Minnesota Twins placed right-hander Joe Ryan on the 15-day injured list with a Grade 2 teres major strain, the club announced Friday.

Ryan exited his start against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday in the third inning with a triceps issue.

"Yeah, it is a punch in the gut," Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said Friday, according to Dave Campbell of The Associated Press. "It's going to need time to heal up, and he'll do everything he can to get himself right and get back, but this is going to be a little while."

The 28-year-old is 7-7 with a 3.60 ERA, a 0.99 WHIP, and 147 strikeouts across 135 innings this season.

Meanwhile, reliever Brock Stewart will undergo season-ending arthroscopic shoulder surgery Tuesday, the team said, according to Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com.

The 32-year-old posted a 5.17 ERA over 16 appearances during an injured-riddled year after being a key member of Minnesota's bullpen in 2023.

The Twins also placed rookie infielder Brooks Lee on the 10-day injured list with biceps tendinitis. Lee was scratched from Friday's lineup as a result of the injury.

Right-hander Louie Varland is starting the second game of Friday's doubleheader against the Cleveland Guardians and could be a candidate to take Ryan's place in the rotation.
