New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez has a torn ligament in his thumb and will have surgery, the club announced Saturday, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.

Alvarez teammate, Starling Marte, said players were told the 22-year-old backstop is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks, per Tim Healey of Newsday.

The Mets placed Alvarez on the 10-day injured list after he sustained the injury while running the bases during Friday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Alvarez has one homer with eight RBIs and a .652 OPS over 16 games this season. He went deep 25 times with 63 RBIs and a .721 OPS across 123 contests during his rookie campaign in 2023.
