Watch: Francona, Nevin bizarrely tossed on same play

It's not often that one play results in both managers being ejected, but that's what happened Monday night between the Cleveland Guardians and Los Angeles Angels.

After Angels reliever Ryan Tepera was ruled to have thrown a ball to Andres Gimenez following an appeal to third base umpire Clint Vondrak, veteran skipper Terry Francona emerged from the dugout to air a grievance with home plate umpire Ron Kulpa.

After what seemed like a relatively cordial discussion, the veteran skipper eventually got very heated and was tossed. The 63-year-old stuck around to get his money's worth.

Once that ended, Kulpa started hearing it from Tepera on the mound, who seemed irate for having to wait so long between pitches. Then interim manager Phil Nevin came out of the Angels' dugout and was tossed from the game as well.

Francona explained postgame that the disagreement stemmed from wanting to challenge whether Gimenez was hit by Tepera's pitch. He then remained mum on what he discussed with Kulpa beyond that, saying, "I just checked on his family a little bit. He checked on mine," according to Mandy Bell of MLB.com.

Nevin also addressed his side of things, arguing that Tepera should have been allowed to stay loose.

"To me, that was a player safety issue, not allowing Ryan any warmup pitches," Nevin said, according to The Associated Press. "And I didn’t understand it."

Following the game, first base umpire John Tumpane explained the official's sides of things.

"We weren't aware that (Francona) was holding for us to look at a hit by pitch," he said in a pool report. "By our protocol, if the pitcher is on the rubber and the batter is in the box, we're moving onto the next pitch.

"Obviously, player safety is paramount," he added, "and looking back at it, yes, we would have given (Tepera) some warmup pitches so his safety was not at risk."

The Guardians' 5-4 lead at the time of the ejections held for the remainder of the game.
