Report: Blue Jays showing interest in Marwin Gonzalez
The Toronto Blue Jays are showing interest in free-agent utility player Marwin Gonzalez, a source told Sportsnet's Shi Davidi.
Gonzalez is the type of versatile defender the Blue Jays often seek, although it remains unclear if Toronto is merely doing its due diligence by checking in with the 2017 World Series champion, Davidi adds.
The 31-year-old is coming off a poor season with the Minnesota Twins, where he posted his lowest OPS (.606) in seven seasons. However, he still provided the Twins with valuable defense at four different positions.
Gonzalez's best campaign came in 2017 with the Houston Astros when he hit .303/.377/.530 with 23 home runs, 34 doubles, and 90 RBIs. He received down-ballot MVP consideration that season.
The Blue Jays have been one of the most active teams this offseason, having already signed Gonzalez's former teammate George Springer, as well as Marcus Semien, Kirby Yates, Robbie Ray, and Tyler Chatwood. They also traded for Steven Matz.
The Twins, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, New York Mets, and Philadelphia Phillies have also been connected to Gonzalez at various times throughout the offseason.
