Mets demolish Phillies, set franchise record for runs scored
The New York Mets dismantled the Philadelphia Phillies during the first game of Thursday's doubleheader, setting a franchise record for runs scored in a single game.
Winning 24-4, the Mets also became the first team since 1894 to score 24 or more runs and allow 24 or more runs in separate games of the same season. New York lost 25-4 against the Washington Nationals on July 31.
The previous franchise record of 23 runs was set 31 years ago to the day in a 1987 game against the Chicago Cubs.
The victory followed Wednesday's dominant showing against the Baltimore Orioles, when the Mets won 16-5. It's the first time the Mets have scored 16 or more runs in back-to-back games in the franchise's history.
