 The Giants are opening a season against the Dodgers for the 34th time in team history; it is the 33rd time that the Dodgers' first game is against the Giants. For each team, it is the most times opening against any opponent in the franchise's history.

 For the first time since 2006, the Giants will start a season under a manager other than Bruce Bochy, as Gabe Kapler takes over. Kapler has a 161-163 managerial record; this is the first time since 1995 (Dusty Baker) that SF starts a season with a manager with fewer than 400 career games under his belt.

 The Dodgers have won the NL West in seven straight seasons. All-time, only the 1991-2005 Braves (14 seasons) and 1998-2006 Yankees (nine years) have also finished first in seven or more successive seasons.

 The Giants' .239 batting average last season was the team's lowest since the 1985 club hit .233. The team's highest batting average among qualifying hitters belonged to Kevin Pillar (.264), who has moved on to the Red Sox as a free agent.

Clayton Kershaw has a 1.05 mark in eight starts on Opening Day (six earned runs in 51.2 innings). Those are the two lowest Opening Day ERAs among active pitchers, minimum four starts.

All eyes figure to be on the pregame pitching announcement when the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers meet for the finale of a four-game season-opening series Sunday night at Dodger Stadium.
The Giants did not reveal their starter for either the second or third game of the season until hours before each contest. When those pitchers were announced, it was not Jeff Samardzija, the team's projected No. 2 starter who still has not appeared in a game.

Tight-lipped Kapler, Giants aim for split with Dodgers

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mauricio Dubon singled home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and the San Francisco Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1 on Sunday night.
The Giants gained a split of the four-game series under new manager Gabe Kapler to open the shortened season after the Dodgers took the first two by a combined score of 17-2.
