Aston Martin's Stroll out of Spanish GP due to injury
Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll will not race in Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix due to injuries to his hand and wrist, the team announced Saturday.
"Over the course of the past six weeks Lance has been experiencing pain in his hand and wrist, which his medical consultant believes is in relation to the procedure he underwent in 2023," a statement said. "As a result his medical team have confirmed that he will not race tomorrow and he will undergo a procedure to rectify these issues before focusing on his recovery."
Stroll participated in Saturday's qualifying session and was scheduled to start Sunday's race in 14th.
He previously underwent surgery for a fracture and displacement in his right wrist, a fracture in his left wrist, a partial fracture in his left hand, and a fracture in the big toe on his right foot after a cycling accident ahead of the 2023 season.
Aston Martin has not yet announced who will take Stroll's place alongside veteran Fernando Alonso for Sunday's race.
The British team has Felipe Drugovich and Stoffel Vandoorne as reserve drivers. One of them could emerge as a fill-in if Stroll is forced to miss an extended period of time.
Stroll has struggled after earning 10 points in the first two races of season. The 26-year-old picked up four points at the Miami Grand Prix sprint race but failed to finish inside the top 10 in the last six races.
