Mets-Brewers trade nixed due to reported concerns over Gomez's hip

Carlos Gomez would've become a member of the New York Mets on Wednesday for the second time in his career if not for his dubious injury history.

A widely reported deal with the Milwaukee Brewers that would've sent Gomez to Queens in exchange for Zack Wheeler and Wilmer Flores crumbed due to the Mets' concern over Gomez's hip, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

"There is no trade," Mets GM Sandy Alderson said. "Unfortunately, social media got ahead of the facts."

A hip injury and a hamstring problem have limited Gomez to just 73 games this season, over which he's compiled a .761 OPS - his lowest since 2011 - while notching eight homers and seven stolen bases in 13 tries. His agent, Scott Boras, insisted after the deal collapsed, however, that Gomez is "injury-free."

"Carlos Gomez has never seen a hip doctor and has never had a hip issue in his playing career," Boras said. "Anyone who suggests that is inaccurate and baldly misrepresenting the truth of the player’s condition."

For a brief moment, the Mets seemed poised to reunite with Gomez, who made his MLB debut with the Mets in 2007. Gomez's representatives were reportedly told a deal had been completed, pending physicals, and the 29-year-old even bid farewell to some of his Brewers teammates in a photo posted to Twitter.

"Whatever has been speculated on all evening will not transpire," added Alderson.

Curiously, however, Flores remained in his club's game against the San Diego Padres long after news of the deal surfaced, a move that suggested a deal was never finalized. Still, after hearing the rumors, Flores couldn't help but shed a few tears on the field.

"Unfortunate situation," Alderson said. "(We) could’ve pulled him and contributed to the speculation. At the same time we’re trying to win."

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin didn't confirm Rosenthal's report, but still expressed his disappointment that the trade wasn't completed.

“We're disappointed the deal did not get done," he said. "We felt very confident it would get done. We weren’t fearful of it not. We're happy to have Carlos Gomez. We like him a lot. We thought it was a win-win for both teams. It wasn’t one team outsmarting the other."
