Bumgarner likely out until after All-Star break

San Francisco Giants ace Madison Bumgarner won't require surgery on his ailing shoulder, a coterie of orthopedists agreed, but the Grade 2 sprain of his left A/C joint will likely keep the 27-year-old out until after the All-Star break, they concluded.

"It's nice when everybody agrees," Giants head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner told Andrew Baggarly of the Mercury News. "We've put a plan in place to rehab him and get him back."

Injured last week in a dirt bike accident he described as "not the most responsible decision (he's) made," Bumgarner has limited range of motion in his shoulder right now, and likely won't start any serious rehab activities until mid-to-late May.

"About three weeks out, we'll see how he's feeling," Groeschner said. "We'll see how much we can push or not push. Bum is a pretty conscientious person. We feel pretty good that when we ask him to do something, he'll do it the right way and give us honest feedback, and we’ll adjust the program as needed."

While Bumgarner recovers, the Giants will look to rookie left-hander Ty Blach to fill the void in their rotation. On Tuesday, in his first outing since taking over for his club's injured ace, Blach limited the Los Angeles Dodgers to two runs on four hits and one walk over five innings in an eventual 2-1 loss.
