Serena Williams' four-year quest for a record-tying 24th Grand Slam victory will have to wait.

The current World No. 22 posted a message on Instagram Wednesday announcing that she will not be competing in the upcoming US Open tournament amid a recovery from a hamstring injury.

"After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the US Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring," Williams' statement read.

"New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world and one of my favorite places to play - I'll miss seeing the fans but will cheer everybody on from afar."

Williams suffered the injury in the first set of a first-round encounter with Belarus' Aliaksandra Sasnovich at Wimbledon, and was forced to pull out of the competition.

The six-time US Open champion last missed the tournament in 2017 because of the birth of her daughter. At 39, Williams sits on 23 Grand Slams, one behind Margaret Court for the overall record.

The main draw of the 141st installment of the US Open starts on August 30. Japan's Naomi Osaka defends her title on the women's side.
