WTA, ATP Tours to return in August as revised tennis schedule unveiled

The WTA and ATP Tours announced Wednesday that they intend to resume their respective seasons in August.

The former will restart with the Palermo Ladies Open in Italy, which is provisionally scheduled to begin Aug. 3. The latter, meanwhile, returns with the Citi Open in Washington, D.C. on Aug. 14.

"It is currently anticipated that tournaments will be held without fans and each tournament will have a limited footprint, with players and essential personnel only," the WTA said.

The US Open remains scheduled for Aug. 31 in New York, while the French Open, which was pushed back due to the coronavirus crisis, is set to begin Sept. 27 in Paris.

"It has been a truly collaborative effort and we hope to add more events to the calendar as the situation evolves. I would like to recognize our tournaments' efforts to operate during these challenging times, as well as our players who will be competing under different conditions," ATP chairman Andrea Gaudenzi said. "At every turn, ensuring that the resumption of the Tour takes place in a safe environment will be paramount."

In conjunction with the release of the revised summer schedule, Tennis Canada confirmed the Rogers Cup has been postponed until 2021. The tournament, one of the marquee warmup events ahead of the US Open, was slated to start Aug. 8 in Toronto.

The professional tennis tours have been on hiatus since mid-March due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the cancellation of Wimbledon for the first time since 1945.
