Angelique Kerber became just the second woman in history to beat Serena Williams twice in a Grand Slam final Saturday. The German handed Serena a 6-3, 6-3 defeat to win her first Wimbledon and third Grand Slam title.

The only other woman to achieve the feat is Serena's sister Venus. Kerber is now three-quarters of the way to a career Grand Slam. She won the Australian Open final over Serena in 2016 and captured a US Open title later that year.

While Serena's game was messy and inconsistent from the start, Kerber was a model of solidity. She committed just five unforced errors (compared to 24 from Serena), defended brilliantly, and put 80 percent of her returns in play against the game's mightiest serve. She broke Serena in the first game of the match, and though she was broken back just three games later, she didn't face a single break point after that.

Kerber's retrieving gave Serena fits, forcing her to overthink and overhit. There were points where Serena threatened to turn the match around, but she never managed to get a firm toehold and take control. She just couldn't quite find her rhythm, and Kerber, ultimately, was just too good.
