Canadian international defender Alistair Johnston is nearing a move to Celtic, reports Fabrizio Romano of The Guardian.

The reigning Scottish champions have reached a verbal agreement with CF Montreal over the transfer, according to Romano, who adds that only final details need to be ironed out before the switch is announced.

The 24-year-old has been a standout performer and vital contributor to his club and country over the past year. He holds the record for most consecutive appearances in the history of Canada's men's national team and played all 90 minutes in the 1-0 World Cup defeat to Belgium on Wednesday.

Johnston, comfortable both in central defense and at right-back, made 33 appearances for Montreal in Major League Soccer this past season, scoring four goals and providing five assists.

Selected 11th overall in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft by Nashville SC, he joined Montreal last year.
