Mexico legend Rafael Marquez announces retirement
Mexico legend Rafael Marquez has announced he's calling time on his storied 22-year professional career.
Marquez, who spent his final campaign as a player back in his home country with boyhood club Atlas, is best known for his seven years at Barcelona, with whom he won four La Liga and two Champions League titles.
The 39-year-old became just the third player in the history of the sport to play in five World Cups this summer in Russia, having first appeared in the 2002 edition in Japan and South Korea. He finishes with 146 caps for El Tri, good for joint-third all-time behind Claudio Suarez and Andres Guardado.
At the club level, he played in France for AS Monaco, for MLS outfit New York Red Bulls, and had a brief spell in Italy with Hellas Verona.
