Javier Mascherano called time on his record-breaking spell as Inter Miami head coach in a surprise announcement Tuesday.

"I want to let everyone know that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my tenure as head coach of Inter Miami CF," he said in a statement.

Mascherano led Miami to its first MLS Cup triumph in his only full season at the helm. With Lionel Messi wearing the captain's armband, the team scored a record 101 goals across regular season and postseason play during the 2025 MLS campaign.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona midfielder's arrival in November 2024 added to the stardust at the club, but he also helped boost Inter Miami's profile in global soccer. Their 2025 Club World Cup run included a win over FC Porto - the first time a CONCACAF side had beaten European opposition in a competitive match - and he oversaw appearances in the 2025 Leagues Cup final and CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinals.

"Javier will forever be part of this club's history and will always hold a special place in the Inter Miami CF family," said Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas. "Not only for being a key part of unforgettable achievements, such as winning the MLS Cup and the team's historic performance at the Club World Cup, but also for the example he set through his dedication and daily work leading the team.

"We respect his decision and are deeply grateful for everything he contributed, wishing him nothing but the very best in his professional and personal future."

Mascherano's coaching staff also exited the club, while Guillermo Hoyos has stepped down from his role as sporting director to oversee the first team for its upcoming matches. The 62-year-old's last coaching role was with Bolivia's Oriente Petrolero in 2023.

Chief soccer officer Alberto Marrero assumed the duties of sporting director.

Miami is currently positioned third in the Eastern Conference with three wins and three draws from seven matches. Mascherano's final match at the helm was Saturday's 2-2 home draw against the New York Red Bulls.

"I will always carry with me the memory of our first star, and wherever I am, I will continue to wish the club all the best moving forward," Mascherano said. "I have no doubt that the club will continue to achieve success in the future."
