Kerr scores 4, Australia holds off Brazil for 2nd place in Group C
Sam Kerr to the rescue.
The Australia superstar notched all four of her side's goals in a 4-1 victory over Jamaica on Tuesday, ensuring the Matildas a second-place finish in Group C ahead of Brazil by virtue of the goals-scored tiebreaker.
Kerr is now level with U.S. striker Alex Morgan in the race for the Golden Boot; both women sit on five goals thus far. The Aussie captain will look to take the outright lead in the round of 16 when she leads her side against Norway later this week.
Despite topping Italy 1-0 in their opening-round finale, the Brazilians only finish third. They advance to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed sides, however, and will likely face one of France or Germany for a berth in the quarterfinals.
Brazil's lone goal in Valenciennes came courtesy of Marta, who is now the top scorer in World Cup history. Her 17th tournament tally surpassed the 16 that retired Germany striker Miroslav Klose put up during his prolific career.
Italy, meanwhile, tops Group C even with the loss, beating out the Aussies on goal difference. It's the first time the Azzurre have ever won their group at the Women's World Cup.
