Dustin Johnson trails leader Wes Roach by one shot following first-round action at the Palmetto Championship from Congaree Golf Club.

The No.1-ranked player in the world posted a 6-under 65 on Thursday. Johnson's day concluded with a chip-in birdie. It also included a seven-hole stretch where the longest birdie putt he made was 11 feet.

However, Johnson wasn't very enthused when asked about his approach play.

"I just hit shots, wherever it goes, it goes," Johnson said, according to ASAP Sports. "But, yeah, like I said, I was swinging good today, gave myself a lot of opportunities and hit some good putts. So, I'm just pleased with the way I played."

Johnson is in the middle of a bit of a slump. He hasn't recorded a top-10 finish since the end of February, and he's missed the cut at both majors this year.

Roach fired a 7-under in the afternoon wave at the makeup event for the canceled Canadian Open. This is the first time he's ever led on the PGA TOUR.

Here's how the top of the leaderboard stands after Round 1:

Place Player To Par R1 Score
1 Wes Roach -7 64
T2 Doc Redman -6 65
T2 Dustin Johnson -6 65
T2 Chesson Hadley -6 65
T2 Erik van Rooyen -6 65
6 Jhonattan Vegas -5 66

Brooks Koepka shot a 1-over to sit in a tie for 75th.

Round 2 of the Palmetto Championship starts Friday at 7:00 a.m. ET.
