Spieth says he's been out since Masters due to COVID-19

Jordan Spieth said he contracted COVID-19 at the end of April, which prevented him from playing at the Valspar Championship.

"I took kind of a week off, and then I ended up, actually, getting COVID, so then I was out for a little while," Spieth said Tuesday at the AT&T Byron Nelson, according to ASAP Sports.

The 27-year-old wanted to play in Tampa - a tournament he won in 2015 - but was forced to quarantine at home instead after developing symptoms the week prior. He hasn't played since finishing tied for third at the Masters.

"I wasn't planning on taking a month off in the spring," he added.

Spieth said he's unsure how he contracted the virus and that no one else in his circle tested positive.

"It was bad for a day and a half and then it was just kind of annoying for the next five days, kind of lost energy and sinus stuff," he said. "And then after that, I started to kind of get full strength back and I would say the last week to week and a half now I've been acting as if it never happened."

The Byron Nelson is the event at which Spieth made his PGA TOUR debut as a 16-year-old in 2010 and finished in a tie for 16th.

"I've only played a couple rounds and so I'm looking to kind of maybe knock a little rust off that I didn't think would necessarily be here," the Dallas native said. "But, yeah, I feel good. I feel strong. I feel ready to go for a good stretch of golf coming up."

He'll look to complete the career grand slam at next week's PGA Championship from Kiawah Island.
