South Africa native Trevor Immelman has been named captain of the International squad for the 2021 Presidents Cup, the tournament announced Tuesday.

Immelman served as an assistant captain under Ernie Els at Royal Melbourne in December. The International team lost the event 16-14, falling to 1-11-1 all time versus the Americans.

The 40-year-old has played in two other Presidents Cups (2005 and 2007), and he'll be the youngest captain in the event's history.

"When I learned I was in the running and the final decision was made, I was very humbled," Immelman said, according to ESPN's Bob Harig. "I have a massive respect for the game of golf and the history of the game and what the PGA Tour has done for golfers all over the world.

"I thoroughly enjoyed playing in the Presidents Cup. I thrived and enjoyed a team environment and being part of a team. To get a taste of that again in Australia with these guys was awesome. I want to try and carry that on."

The 2021 Presidents Cup will be hosted at Quail Hollow Golf Club in Charlotte, North Carolina - the annual site of the Wells Fargo Championship - from Sept. 23-26.
