Hideki Matsuyama fired a 9-under 63 in Round 2 of the BMW Championship on Friday to set the new course record at Medinah Country Club and take a one-shot lead into the weekend.

The Japanese star's bogey-free, nine-birdie performance broke the record at the Chicago-area course by two shots. He's yet to make a bogey through 36 holes.

The 27-year-old is looking for the sixth win of his PGA Tour career and first since the 2017 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Here's how the top of the leaderboard stands after Round 2:

Place Player To Par R2 Score
1 Hideki Matsuyama -12 63
T2 Patrick Cantlay -11 67
T2 Tony Finau -11 66
4 Justin Thomas -10 69
T5 Adam Hadwin -9 68
T5 Lucas Glover -9 69
T5 Chez Reavie -9 68
T5 Rory Sabbatini -9 68
T5 Corey Conners -9 66
T5 Xander Schauffele -9 68

Patrick Cantlay and Tony Finau - both future Presidents Cup team members - share second place. The two Americans also played Medinah without a blemish on Friday.

Co-leader after Round 1 Justin Thomas dropped two shots in his first three holes but rebounded well with six birdies on his final 14 holes to claim fourth.

Rory McIlroy (8-under), Tommy Fleetwood (8-under), Rickie Fowler (7-under), and Jon Rahm (7-under) headline the group outside the top 10.

Tiger Woods sits well back at 2-under after shooting a second straight 71. He's in a tie for 49th and will need a top-11 result to advance to next week's Tour Championship.
