Hideki Matsuyama fired a 9-under 63 on Friday at Medinah Country Club to set the new course record by two shots and climb into the lead at the BMW Championship at 12-under.

Matsuyama rode a hot putter to set the new mark. He gained over five strokes with his putting - a seven-shot improvement over Thursday's round when he shot 69.

His bogey-free Friday consisted of nine birdies. This is the first time in Matsuyama's PGA Tour career that he's played the first 36 holes without a bogey, according to the 15th Club's Justin Ray.

The 27-year-old is searching for his first win on the PGA Tour since the 2017 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone. He's also projected to move up 30 spots to No. 3 in the FedEx Cup standings if he can hang on for the BMW Championship title.
