Tiger grinds out 1st-round 70 at U.S. Open
Despite not having his best stuff, Tiger Woods scraped together a 1-under 70 in Round 1 of the U.S. Open.
Woods' first birdie of the day came on No. 4 at Pebble Beach, which he followed with a double-bogey on the par-3 5th. However, red numbers on No. 5 and 6 got Tiger back to 1-under where he would stay for the remainder of the round.
He uncharacteristically struggled with his irons Thursday. He only hit 8-of-18 greens in regulation and lost nearly 1.5 strokes on approach shots.
Woods salvaged his round with a remarkable putting performance. He gained 3.8 strokes with the flatstick, which was bolstered by this 30-foot par save on No. 14.
The three-time U.S. Open champion finished his day in a tie for 28th, five shots behind leader Justin Rose.
Tiger's second round begins Friday at 11:24 a.m. ET.
