Pepperell after brilliant 67: 'I was a little hungover'

Beginning the final round eight strokes off the pace, most people wouldn't have given Eddie Pepperell much of a chance to win The Open.

The Englishman played brilliantly in difficult conditions on Sunday, posting the lowest round of the day, a 4-under 67, to vault up the leaderboard and firmly in to contention.

It was an exceptional display of golf, one that is made even more impressive after Pepperell admitted he was hungover after drinking the night before.

"I was a little hungover. I won't lie. I had too much to drink last night," Pepperell said, per Dylan Dethier of Golf.com. "I was so frustrated yesterday that today was really, I wouldn't say a write-off, but I didn't feel I was in the golf tournament. Whether I shot 69 or 73 today, it wouldn't have been heartbreaking. But as it happens, I shot 67. So, you know, it's a funny game."

Pepperell, who is one of the more entertaining characters on the European Tour, currently sits just one shot off the lead as conditions worsen at Carnoustie. With the most difficult stretch of the course still ahead for the leaders, the 27-year-old is in excellent shape sitting in the clubhouse.
