Tiger Woods carded an even-par 71 to close his Open Championship Sunday, a final round of golf that captivated the entire sports world.

When seemingly the entire field was giving away strokes as the wind howelled at Carnoustie, Tiger was locked in, birdieing two of the first six holes to cut his deficit to a single shot.

Thanks to some sloppy play from the leaders at 9-under, Woods stood on the 11th tee alone in the lead.

It seemed as though it was all happening.

However, after sending his approach shot into the gallery on No. 11, he proceeded to make a double-bogey, quickly handing away the lead.

Woods also made bogey on the par-4 12th.

After draining a long birdie putt on the 14th, hope remained that Woods could pull off the unthinkable, but it wasn't meant to be.

He made par on his final four holes to finish at 5-under for the tournament, in a tie for sixth.
